How to Prevent Frozen Pipes and Water Damage: Winter Safety Tips for Homeowners

When freezing temperatures hit, frozen pipes are one of the biggest risks to your home. As water freezes, it expands, causing pressure that can lead to burst pipes and expensive water damage. The good news? With a little preparation, you can protect your home and keep your plumbing safe this winter!

Here are some tips to prevent frozen pipes:

  1. Unhook Garden Hoses from Outdoor Faucets
Even frost-proof faucets can freeze if hoses are left attached. Disconnect hoses and let any remaining water drain to prevent freezing and potential damage.
  2. Winterize Outdoor Faucets
Shut off any indoor valves that supply water to outdoor faucets and open the faucets to allow the water to drain. Leave them open throughout the winter to avoid freezing.
  3. Close Garage Doors
If you have water pipes running through your garage, keeping the doors closed can help shield them from freezing temperatures.
  4. Open Cabinet Doors
For pipes located under sinks or near exterior walls, open the cabinet doors to allow warm air to circulate around the pipes.
  5. Let Faucets Drip
Turn on a slow drip from faucets connected to pipes that are more likely to freeze. Moving water is less likely to freeze than standing water.
  6. Keep Your Home Warm
Set your thermostat to at least 55°F, even if you’re away. This will keep your home warm enough to prevent frozen pipes.
  7. Plan Ahead for Problem Areas
If certain pipes have frozen in past winters, take action now. Consult a plumber or mechanical contractor to address and protect those areas before the cold sets in.

If you discover a frozen pipe, don’t panic! Here’s what you can do:

  • Shut Off Your Main Water Valve
This prevents flooding in case the frozen pipe bursts as it begins to thaw.
  • Inspect for Damage
Check exposed pipes for cracks or leaks, particularly in attics, basements, and crawl spaces.
  • Listen for Signs of Leaks
As temperatures rise, watch and listen for running water or other signs of leaks.
  • Call a Licensed Plumber
If you detect any leaks, keep all faucets open to allow remaining water to drain, and call a professional plumber to handle the repairs.
  • Thaw Pipes Safely
Never use torches or heat guns, as they can cause fires. Instead, use a space heater or hair dryer to gently warm the frozen area.

Taking these preventative steps can save you from the stress and expense of dealing with frozen or burst pipes. Preparation is key to avoiding winter water damage!
